I spend a lot of time in the Lake District, with its unspoilt natural beauty it has to be one of my favourite locations.
Around five years ago whilst in the Lakes, my other half went out for the weekend newspapers and returned with an armful of freshly cut dahlias. On his journey, next to the roadside was an honesty box where Howe Farm had presented their dahlias for sale. I cannot quite explain how overjoyed I was at this unexpected gift - out of all the bouquets of flowers I have received over the years, this was by far the most special.
What I love about the Lake District is that honesty boxes are still common practice, flowers and vegetables are displayed for sale and you take the goods leaving your money under the stone. You've got to be quick, (and lucky) as it is rare that the boxes are stocked.
This Saturday driving past Howe Farm, the honesty box was empty, however on our return journey there was the most amazing surprise - after five years waiting to relive this happy memory, there in the box was one bunch of freshly cut, beautifully scented sweet peas standing in a jug of water! And you know what - it made my day, so thankyou Howe Farm in the Lyth Valley!
